ST. BASIL COLLEGE OPENS NEW INITIATIVE
St. Basil College will open its doors in September, 2009 to students, both men and women of all faiths. The College began in 1939 as a seminary to educate men to serve as priests for the Ukrainian Catholic Church. Since that time, hundreds of men have graduated and have gone on to serve the Ukrainian community.
Recently, the College's Board of Trustees has voted to broaden the College's mission to make its resources and expertise available to the wider community while continuing with its traditional mission. Beginning in Fall, 2009, the College will offer courses leading to a Certificate in Eastern European and Ukrainian Studies. The purpose of the program is to provide students with knowledge and understanding of the culture, customs, and traditions, of the nations of Eastern Europe, and in particular Ukraine, special attention is given to its history, political systems, and religious traditions. The program provides enrichment for those with some knowledge about this part of the world and to acquaint others having no background with a foundation.
Initial courses in the program will be: Ukrainian Culture, Customs, and Traditions and History of Eastern Europe. They will be offered in late afternoon/evening on the St. Basil College campus in Stamford. In Spring, 2010 courses to be offered include: Politics and Political Systems of Eastern Europe and Spirituality: East and West.
St. Basil College is ideally positioned to offer courses and programs which relate to Eastern Europe and Ukraine because of its long tradition as a center of Ukrainian culture; the Ukrainian Museum and Library of Stamford, the Ukrainian Research and Cultural Center, an extensive library, and an experienced and well qualified faculty who have lived and worked in that part of the world.
